This is a collaborative work between Whadjuk-Ballardong Elder, Community Leader, and Artist Aunty Joanne Parfitt, and Wadjela academic and artist Darcy Rankin.
We have been working together for years on a number of significant art projects on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja. We just finished a residency at Midland Junction Art Centre. Joanne was doing painting and Darcy was doing printmaking, we went out and took a lot of photos of the bush and how the plants and animals change as you move across the boodja. We followed Blackadder creek down from the hills to the kwobidak Derbarl Yerrigan. When we got back to the studio, Joanne did studies of different animals and trees and plants on Noongar Boodja. Well we sold all the paintings but the drawings were really good too, so we decided to experiment with compiling them into this web animation. It also teaches a little bit of waangkaniny from Noongar Country and can be used for reading to the little ones.
